The University of Northampton is a public university based in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. It was formed in 1999 by the amalgamation of a number of training colleges, and gained full university status as the University of Northampton in 2005.
Northampton Technical College was opened at St George's Avenue—now the site of the Avenue Campus—in 1924. Eight years later, a new building for the College was formally opened by the Duke and Duchess of York. A School of Art opened later in 1937.
At the beginning of the 1970s, Northamptonshire was one of the few counties in England to lack a teacher-training college. A college in Liverpool lost its home and was transferred to what is now the Park Campus. The College of Education was opened by the Secretary of State for Education and Science, Margaret Thatcher, in 1972. In 1975, this College amalgamated with the Colleges of Technology and Art to become Nene College of Higher Education, taking its name from the River Nene. In 1978, it integrated the Leathersellers College from London.
In 1993, the college incorporated St. Andrew's School of Occupational Therapy and was granted undergraduate degree awarding powers. In 1997, it took in the Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery.
It became University College Northampton in 1999 and gained full university status in 2005. To gain university status it had to convince the Privy Council that a Royal Decree banning the establishment of a university in Northampton, signed by King Henry III in 1265 following the Battle of Lewes, should be repealed. In 2005, the university also received the power to validate its own research degrees, which had formerly been validated by the University of Leicester. In the graduation ceremonies in July 2006, seven students received their first doctoral degrees validated by the University of Northampton.
In January 2010, the School of Applied Sciences was renamed the School of Science and Technology and moved into the newly refurbished Newton Building at Avenue Campus. The Newton Building was officially opened in September 2010 by HRH The Princess Anne.

At the University of Northampton, we offer a range of options when it comes to accommodation for students, including halls of residence and privately-owned housing. We have a selection of university accommodation available at Waterside Campus, in the Town Centre and at Scholars Green Student Village.
We offer single and twin rooms with shared bathrooms or en-suites, complete with halls facilities and accommodation services. The rooms are all equipped with network access and WiFi, as well as 24-hour security and a dedicated support team. If you’re unsure about what life in student halls entails, visit our Living in Halls page. If you have made a student accommodation application, you will need to know important information about your room offer and extra information about TV licensing.
With over 2,500 bed spaces in our halls across Waterside Campus; as well as our off-campus accommodation at Scholars Green Student Village on Boughton Green Road, St George’s Avenue and Northampton town centre (St John’s Halls), we offer a variety of different room types to suit all budgets and needs.
All of our student rooms are furnished with a bed, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf, chair and bin. The main utility bills for heating, lighting, water and electricity are included within your rent to make it a little easier for you. Your room will have network and WiFi access, providing links to the University computer network.
If you are a first year international student you are eligible to apply to live in our halls of residence.
Applications will be considered in the order that they are received.
You will live in flats with up to nine other students, usually from a mix of other countries. You will have your own room (some twin rooms are available) but you will share kitchen facilities. You can request a room in single-sex or mixed-sex flats.
All of our halls of residence have general kitchen appliances available for use, including toasters and microwaves, but you will need to bring your own pots, pans, cutlery and bedding. Smoking is prohibited inside any halls of residence building.
There are a number of washing machines and tumble driers available in our halls of residence.
We provide a cleaning service for the stairwells (not in townhouses) and main corridors during term time. You will be primarily responsible for keeping your room, bathroom/s and kitchen clean and tidy. Our cleaning staff will not move any possessions when they clean. Please note that additional charges may be applied if rooms and communal areas are not kept clean.
Recycling facilities are available in all of our halls of residence, as well as in academic and administrative areas. We provide bins for:
food, paper, cardboard, plastics, cans and general waste
glass bottles
printer and toner cartridges
clothing and textiles
We arrange standard personal possessions insurance with Endsleigh Insurance – the cost of this is included in your rent payments. You can increase your level of cover with Endsleigh but you will need to pay for this yourself.
All of the bedrooms in our halls have WiFi and the facility to connect to the university’s ResNET. Network access is free for all residents.
If you want to watch live TV or stream live TV online in your room you must buy a television licence. Following a change in the law, you must also buy a television licence if you download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand. If you have a television that you use to watch live TV or BBC iPlayer in your flat’s communal area then you must have a TV licence for the flat.
Accommodation fees vary depending on the hall and room type, but all heating, lighting and water costs are included, as well as personal possessions insurance cover from Endsleigh Insurance. You will have to pay a £300 refundable deposit within seven days of receiving your room offer, which is usually in the March before you are due to start your course. It’s a good idea to plan ahead for this.
Prices quoted below are for the academic year 2021/22 and are per person, for a period of 42 weeks.
Priority for halls is given to disabled and first year students new to Northampton, with limited car parking available for eligible students.
